- Wall-mounted (lean-to) or free-standing
- Made-to-measure size and layout to suit the playground
What is a playground canopy?
A playground canopy, also called a playground shelter or an outdoor shelter for schools, is a permanent, engineered structure with a powder-coated steel frame and a solid polycarbonate or fabric roof that covers an outdoor play or games area so it stays usable in rain, wind and strong sun. It is fixed to the ground on its own posts or against a building wall, not a temporary or seasonal fitting.
We build ours from powder-coated steel frames, finished in your school colours or any RAL shade, with impact-resistant polycarbonate roof sheets that filter around 99% of UV. Canopies fix either wall-mounted as a lean-to against an existing building, or free-standing on their own posts, whichever suits the playground layout.
Which playground canopy is best?
The best playground canopy is the one sized and engineered to your play area and how it is used, so a school compares four things: whether it fixes wall-mounted or free-standing, the roof material, the clear span needed to cover the space, and the finish.
A wall-mounted lean-to canopy suits a play area that runs alongside a school building and is usually the more economical option because one edge fixes to the existing wall. A free-standing canopy on its own posts suits a play area away from any building, such as the middle of a playground or games court. Most schools specify a clear polycarbonate roof for daylight and UV filtering; a tinted or opal finish reduces glare where a games area faces direct sun.
Where the priority is summer shade over a dining or play area and rain cover matters less, a shade sail may be enough; our school shade sails page compares the two.
Canopy forms and roof profiles compared
| Form | How it is built | Drainage | Access below | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mono-pitch | A single-slope roof on a steel frame | Falls to one side | Sits close to a wall or along a route | Walls, walkways and long building elevations |
| Curved (barrel-vault) | A curved roof on curved steel rafters | Sheds water off the curve to the eaves | More projection and headroom | Entrances, social spaces, cycle and buggy shelters |
| Cantilever | Roof carried from one line of columns or a wall fixing | Set by the roof profile | No front posts, so the space below stays clear | Entrances, drop-offs and play areas where columns would block access |
| Freestanding | Stands on its own posts and footings | Set by the roof profile | Posts on both sides; can stand anywhere on the site | Open ground, courts and routes away from buildings |
| Wall-mounted (lean-to) | One edge fixes to an existing wall | Falls away from the wall | Fewer posts, as the wall carries one edge | Play areas and nursery gardens beside a building |
Forms combine: a canopy can be a wall-mounted mono-pitch or a cantilevered curved roof. We set the profile, the drainage fall and the fixing at survey.
What is a playground canopy made of?
A playground canopy is made of a powder-coated steel frame in your school colours or any RAL shade, carrying impact-resistant polycarbonate roof sheets that filter around 99% of UV and keep the play area dry.
Made in your school colours
Powder-coated steel frames finished in your school colours or any RAL shade, with no sharp edges or exposed fixings, so the canopy fits the look of your grounds.
All-weather polycarbonate roof
Impact-resistant polycarbonate sheets keep the area dry through rain, wind and bright sun. Clear sheets suit most schools; a tinted or opal finish reduces glare where a games area faces direct sun.
Wall-mounted or free-standing
Fixed to an existing building as a lean-to, or free-standing on its own posts, to suit the playground layout.
Engineered foundations
Foundations are designed to the structural loading the site requires; a wall-mounted canopy uses the existing wall for one edge.
Roof materials compared
| Roof material | Daylight and UV | Weather cover | Span | Typical life |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polycarbonate sheet, 5mm or 8mm | Clear, opal or tinted; filters around 99% of UV | Water-resistant, sealed with a double rubber bead | Carried bay by bay on the steel frame | 20 to 30 years |
| PVC-coated polyester fabric | Translucent; gives shade and keeps the area bright | Weatherproof, tensioned to shed rain | Longer clear spans with few supports | 15 to 25 years |
| PTFE-coated glass fabric | Translucent, with a self-cleaning surface | Weatherproof, tensioned to shed rain | Larger or higher-profile spans | 25 to 35 years or more |
Typical lives are the figures given on our product pages. The steel frame usually outlasts the roof, and roof sheets or a membrane can be replaced without rebuilding it. We confirm the roof specification at survey.
How much does a playground canopy cost?
A playground canopy costs £8,000 to £30,000 installed. These are indicative ranges to confirm at a site survey, not fixed prices, because the cost moves with the clear span, the height, the roof material and the groundworks needed to fix the frame.
Four things drive the figure: the clear span (a wider play area needs more steel and a larger roof), the height and any wind loading on an exposed site, the roof specification (standard clear polycarbonate against a tinted or opal finish), and the groundworks (new foundations cost more than fixing to an existing slab or wall). We quote every playground canopy after a survey and provide CAD drawings and a specification you can use for a governors' business case or a capital-funding application.
| Playground canopy type | Indicative installed cost | Main cost drivers |
|---|---|---|
| Wall-mounted lean-to canopy | £8,000 to £18,000 | span, wall fixing, roof spec |
| Free-standing playground canopy | £12,000 to £30,000 | clear span, new foundations, height |
| Larger social or dining canopy | £20,000 to £30,000 | roof area, groundworks, access |
Indicative UK ranges to confirm at survey, installed and excluding any enabling works. Our work is quote-based; we do not sell fixed-price units.
Do playground canopies need planning permission?
A playground canopy often needs planning permission and building-regulations approval, because a permanent structure on a school site is not covered by the domestic permitted-development rights that apply to a house. Whether a full application is needed depends on the size of the canopy, the site and whether the school sits in a conservation area or has listed buildings.
Larger free-standing canopies and anything that changes the elevation of a school building usually need a planning application, and most permanent playground canopies need building-regulations sign-off for structural loading. We supply the CAD drawings, structural calculations and specification your local authority, academy trust or building-control officer needs, and we can advise early on what a specific project is likely to require. Our guide to planning permission for canopies explains when an application is needed.
Are playground canopies safe for children?
A playground canopy is engineered for a school site, using an impact-resistant polycarbonate roof, a powder-coated steel frame with no sharp edges or exposed fixings, and engineered foundations designed to the structural loading the site requires, so the finished structure is built for daily use by children of the age it serves.
We design each canopy to an age-appropriate scale, whether that is a low-level early years canopy or a taller structure for juniors and seniors, and we finish the frame in your school colours or any RAL shade so it fits the grounds. The roof, the frame and the foundations are specified to the site at survey stage, and we provide the structural calculations and drawings a school or trust needs before work begins.
How are playground canopies installed?
Canopies & Shelters installs playground canopies with our own teams across England, Scotland and Wales in four stages: a site survey, a CAD design and specification for sign-off, UK manufacture of the frame and roof, then groundworks and the on-site build, planned around the school calendar to keep disruption to lessons and staff to a minimum.
Most schools prefer groundworks and the main build during the summer or half-term holidays, with any final fitting completed in term time once footings have cured. Recent playground work includes an 8.0m x 2.0m wall-fixed cantilever canopy at Moss Valley Primary Academy in Manchester and two cantilever canopies at St Richard's RC Primary School in Skelmersdale. Send us a site plan or photos and our design team returns a scaled proposal and a programme that fits your holiday dates.
How long does a playground canopy last?
A playground canopy lasts 20 to 30 years or more. Under heavy playground use the powder-coated steel frame is the long-life element, and the impact-resistant polycarbonate sheets are the part most likely to be refreshed, one sheet at a time without rebuilding the frame.
Routine care is a periodic clean and a check of the fixings and gutters, and the roof holds its clarity for many years under its 99% UV filter. We also re-roof existing canopies: at Up Holland High School a new canopy roof went onto the retained steel legs.
What are the benefits of a playground canopy?
A playground canopy adds usable, all-weather outdoor space to a school site: it keeps break times, PE and outdoor play running in rain as well as sun, extends space for outdoor learning without the cost of a building extension, and gives a covered area for dining or assembly on a wet day.
Because the space works whatever the forecast, staff are not planning lessons or lunch cover around the weather, and pupils get more time outside across the year. A canopy can also link to a covered MUGA or a separate shade sail over a dining terrace, so a school can mix solid all-weather cover with lighter summer shade across different parts of the grounds.

Questions about playground canopies
Can a playground canopy be made in our school colours?
Yes. The steel frame is powder-coated, so it can be finished in your school colours or any RAL shade at no compromise to the structure.
Will installation disrupt the school day?
We plan installations around the school calendar, often completing groundworks and the main build during holidays, and use our own fitting teams to keep any term-time disruption to lessons and staff to a minimum.
Should we choose a wall-mounted or free-standing canopy?
A wall-mounted lean-to canopy suits a play area alongside a school building and is usually more economical, because one edge fixes to the existing wall. A free-standing canopy on its own posts suits a play area away from any building. For what a playground canopy costs and how schools pay for one, see our guides to school canopy costs and funding a school canopy.
