What is a door canopy?

A door canopy is a small, wall-fixed roof over a doorway that keeps rain off the entrance and anyone standing at it, built from a powder-coated steel or aluminium frame with a polycarbonate roof. It is also called an over-door canopy, a front door canopy or a porch canopy, and it is the smallest structure we make.

We fit door canopies to the front doors of homes and to the communal and side entrances of flats and housing schemes. A house canopy usually covers one doorway; a communal entrance often needs a wider canopy, or one over each door, sized to the doorway and the wall it fixes to. For a school, office or hospital entrance, see our entrance canopies.

Which door canopy is best?

The best door canopy is the one matched to the doorway and the wall it fixes to, so a homeowner or housing association compares three things: the form (a flat lean-to canopy that sits close to the wall, or a curved canopy with more projection and headroom), the frame material (powder-coated steel for strength on a wider communal entrance, aluminium for a lighter fixing on a rendered or lightweight wall), and the roof and finish.

For a single house door, a compact lean-to canopy in a colour to match the woodwork or brickwork usually does the job. For a block of flats or a communal side entrance, we often specify a wider or curved canopy in aluminium or steel to cover more of the step and any residents waiting at the door, sometimes alongside a carport or cycle store on the same site.

What are door canopies made of?

A door canopy is made of a powder-coated steel or aluminium frame finished to any RAL colour, with a polycarbonate roof that carries a long-life 99% UV filter to keep it from yellowing or going brittle.

Steel or aluminium frame

Powder-coated steel for strength on a wider communal entrance; aluminium for a lighter fixing on a rendered or lightweight wall, or an exposed, coastal doorway.

Polycarbonate roof

A polycarbonate roof sheet sealed at the joints, finished with the frame in a colour to suit the building.

Flat lean-to or curved

A flat lean-to canopy sits close to the wall; a curved canopy gives more projection and headroom over the step.

Wall fixing

Wall plates set into sound brick, block or render; on an older or rendered wall we check the fixing before we start.

How much does a door canopy cost?

A door canopy costs from around £300 installed for a single over-door canopy on a house, rising to more for a wider communal entrance canopy or where several doorways need covering across a housing scheme or block. These are indicative UK ranges to confirm at survey, not fixed prices, because the figure moves with the size, the frame material and the wall fixing.

Four things drive the cost: the width and projection (a wider canopy over a communal entrance needs more frame), the material (aluminium against steel), the wall it fixes to (a sound brick or block wall is a straightforward fixing; render, cladding or an older wall can need extra preparation), and the number of doorways on one site. We quote every door canopy after a survey or from clear photos and measurements, and provide a specification you can approve before we install.

Do door canopies need planning permission?

A door canopy on a house is usually permitted development, so it does not normally need a planning application, provided it stays within the size and projection limits that apply to a domestic front or side door. It is still worth checking before you order if the house is listed or in a conservation area.

A canopy on a communal entrance, a block of flats or a listed building does not carry the same automatic permitted-development rights as a single house, so it may need a planning check or, on a listed building, listed-building consent. We can advise early on what a particular entrance is likely to need, and we supply drawings and a specification if your project needs one for a planning or building-control application.

How are door canopies installed?

Canopies & Shelters installs door canopies with our own teams across England, Scotland and Wales, fixing the frame straight to the wall above the door using wall plates set into sound brick, block or render, then fitting the polycarbonate roof and sealing the joints. Most house canopies are a one-day fit.

We start from a survey, a set of photos and measurements, or drawings you send us, confirm the width and projection against the doorway, then manufacture the frame and roof before installing. A communal or multi-doorway job is programmed to keep the entrance usable throughout, and on an older or rendered wall we check the fixing before we start so the canopy sits securely.

How long does a door canopy last?

A door canopy lasts 15 to 25 years, because the powder-coated steel or aluminium frame resists corrosion and the polycarbonate roof carries a long-life 99% UV filter that keeps it from yellowing or going brittle. The frame is the long-life part, and the roof sheet is the part most likely to need replacing first.

A powder-coated frame needs little more than an occasional clean, and aluminium is naturally corrosion-resistant, which suits an exposed or coastal doorway. Where a roof sheet does mark, fade or crack after years of weather, we can replace it without taking down the frame, and we re-cover and refurbish existing door canopies as well as fitting new ones.

What are the benefits of a door canopy?

A door canopy keeps rain off the doorway and off anyone standing at it, whether that is someone fumbling for their keys, a visitor waiting to be let in, or a delivery being handed over at a communal entrance. It also shields the door and frame itself from direct weather, which helps paintwork, locks and seals last longer.

On a house it gives a finished, sheltered look to the front or side door and can be finished in a colour to match the property. On a block of flats or a housing scheme, it gives residents and visitors a dry, marked entrance point, and it pairs well with wider site cover such as a carport where residents also need somewhere to park undercover.

Why choose Canopies & Shelters for door canopies?

Canopies & Shelters sizes each door canopy to its doorway and checks the wall it fixes to before we make it, so a house canopy is usually a one-day fit and a housing scheme's entrances can be covered in one programme.

We supply and fit door canopies for homeowners, housing associations and managing agents across the areas we cover, and every canopy is made to measure for the doorway and finished in any RAL colour. See where we work on our areas we cover page, or send us your entrance details or a few photos and we will come back with a design and a price.

Door canopy questions

Do you fit door canopies to flats and communal entrances?

Yes. As well as house front doors, we install door canopies at the communal and side entrances of blocks of flats and housing schemes, sized and fixed to the wall structure.

Can a door canopy be fitted above a rendered or older wall?

Yes, though we check the wall before we start. Most canopies fix to sound brick or block with wall plates, and on render, cladding or an older wall we confirm the fixing so the canopy sits securely.

Can you cover more than one doorway on the same site?

Yes. For a housing scheme or block with several entrances, we quote each doorway together and can programme the install to keep every entrance usable throughout the work.
